Shabad Hazaaray was not compiled by Guru Sahib. All the shabads in Shabad Hazaaray are from Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee but are located in different Raags.
Some gursikh premi must have liked these shabads very much and compiled them into one baani.

often times people call the first shabad of shabad hazaray as the whole of shabad hazaray but shabad hazaray paath is actually 7 different shabads
the sakhi behind the compilation of this shabad (thayra mukh suhaavaa jeeo) which comes at the beginning of shabad hazaray paath is available all over the internet.
the entire of the shabad hazaray paath is seven shabads from guru granth sahib
i think bhai mani singh jee or another gursikh compiled 10 of guru gobind singh jee's shabad and called these 'shabad hazare patshahee 10'
so those are the two shabad hazaray paaths in most sundar gutkas
i don't know anything though --- i'm guessing the exact answer to your question may or may not be in some historic panthic granth ... if you are able to find out please let us know :D
Or if somebody knows please post :D
bhul chuk maaf karnaa

i don't think there is a restriction on when to read this paath...
i'm not sure myself but i think it is good to do this paath to feel closer to guru sahib ... like a real soul bride

WGJKK, WGJKF,
As mentioned that shabad hazare (compilation of 7 shabads) done by some prominent gursikh and after that it became a practice to recite in the morning along with Nitnem. Still some gursikhs recite shabad Hazare additional to Nitnem in the morning.
I want to more about Rehras, how it was compiled, who complied and when it was complied into present form.

You can listen to shabad hazare of sikhnet.com they have three recordings on there I personnaly like Harnbans singhs recording, if you go to there download bani section you can download the Gurmukhi/english translation & transliteration to shabad hazare, if you read the translation it will blow you away it's so beauthiful.

My mother recently told me that it was written by Guru Arjun Dev Ji to his father. He had been missing his father, as he had been sent to his 'Nan-ke' (maternal grandparents house).
But I would like to know the whole history of the composition

If Shabad Hazaare was written by Guru Arjan Dev Ji (when he was not yet "Guru") and writing to Guru Ram Daas Jee (the Guru of the time)... then why or how can the word "NANAK" be used in the shabads.... as "NANAK" is ONLY used by the JYOT OF NANAK - i.e. when person became GURU.
food for thought.
if someone has more info about when the Baani was composed then I would be appreciative.

Veer Kulbir Singh ji please give some more gyaan to a moorakh like myself. So that means Shabad Hazare by Sahib Sri Guru Arjan Dev Jee is (like Dukhbhanjani Sahib and Sukhmana Sahib) a compilation of Shabads (from Gurbani) done by Sikhs? And not in the order as they appear in Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee? Also, is it a morning Bani? Or can it be recited any time of the day?
Thank you :)

--------------
There is no baani called Shabad Hazare in Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee but all the shabads compiled in it are in Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee, similar to Dukh-Bhanjani Sahib and Sukhmana Sahib.
------------
Also, is it a morning Bani? Or can it be recited any time of the day?
-----------
Many gursikhs do this baani in the morning but there is no restriction on doing it at a later time in day. All baanis' paath can be done at any time but we must do them at the presecribed time as well. For example, Siri Jap jee Sahib must be done at Amritvela but this does not mean that it can't be done at any other time. About Sohila Sahib, some gursikhs say that it should be done at night time only. I am not sure about this. So I will refrain from commenting on it.
