I recently went to the AKJ rehinsbhai at smethwick gurdwara and saw lots of singhs and singhnia dressed up as if they were going to war or something
i fully respect the wearing of a bana and big kirpans and stuff but then the next day i saw the same people at the gurdwara wearing tracksuits and jeans,
the point im tryin to get accross is...WHY do people dress up for reinsbhais as if they are "comparitvely" going on a night out on the town
what is at the rehinsbhais that fuels this need to wear such outfits only for that one day, isnt it the same Guru that is at the gurdwara rehinsbhais that is at the gurdwara the next day or is it not our guru that is trying to be impressed???
why do they wear the full outfits one day then the nxt day disrespect it the next by not wearing it.
i've seen this at previous rehinsbhais aswell and asked myself "are these people for real"
Is it just for show or is there something els???????

just out of curiousity.
I don't wear the FULL Bana. I don't wear a chola.
However I do wear a kurtha pachama, kirpaan and a hazooria...and I don't wear it ALL the time, only when I present myself to my Guru. Is this pretending? My job doesn't allow me to wear bana all the time, so i usually think whenver i go to gurudwara or to the room in my home where Guru Sahib is prakaash I wear kirpaan on the outside and hazooria, etc. is this wrong?

i've noticed it aswell, see lots of singhs dressin up as if its a nihang fashion show......and the singhnia dress up as if its a modelling shoot!
also noticed that alot of people treat it as a meet and greet rather than going to listen to kirtan!
shameful really but what can you do!!

i believe that if you are True Gursikhs and are good role models for Sikhi, then wearing a bana is justified - i think a LOT of kids do get inspired by the bana and it gives them "chah" to also wear bana - and then this is where the parchaar comes in as to why bana is there and how it should not be abused.
I have to mention the brilliant shining example of Bhai Sukhwinder Singh from Birmingham who has inspired so many - i have seen this with my own eyes.
However, in other areas, it seems there are too many militant wannabes who decide wearing bana and preparing for some sort of war is more important than family and education - thus they have strained relations with family at home and just fail college and universities. And there are also plenty of them in the UK too...

i agree with v a h e g u r o o o o veer/bheinjee....wearin baaNaa inspires others to com into sikhee and also wear baaNaa...so they start wearin baaNaa. I think these gursikhs should also b workin on tha inside n keepin rehiit, doin simran etc. you should b pure inside and out...sum ppl r not prepared to take on tha world in baaNaa full time, but thats sumtin they( which also includes me) should definately b workin on.
they also shouldnt get hankaar from wearin baaNaa and look down at others who dont wear baaNaa.
sry if my rambling made no sense...just take wut good u can from it jee

Totally agree, thanks for highlighting this. If a singhs going to wear a huge dumalla with chand torah he should do it whenever he goes to darbar, not just when hundreds of people are gonna be watching him.
ChingWing - what your doing is a start. We should strive to dress as Guru ji would want us to all the time, but definately doing it when you go to your Guru is a brilliant start.
Forgive me for not wearing bana myself but this post makes so much sense.
please dont stop wearing bana people, but instead increase how much we wear.

waheguru ji
i was just wondering as it seems that many people are offended that singh/singhnis wear baana for one day and the next day they dont; is it okay for a singh/singhni to wear baana on special occasions like their wedding?
i personally believe that one should attempt to be in baana as much as posible, but for many of us it is made difficult by our occupations and the demands of professional/ student life in the western world. and in a way it also offends me that many singh/singhnis only dress in baana for social events to make themselves look "cool" and "into" sikhi.
this arises another question in my mind: what constitutes as baana? (besides the 5 kakaar). i mean are only cholay considered baana? what about kurtay pajamay/ salwaar kameez?

Wahi guru ji ka khalsa wheguru jiki fateh,
U r righ in sayng so. U know what Guru sahib say about thhis hypocracy in Assa di War.
We shold wear only the dress for which our character realy resembles . and if we are so near to guru than we can not think about the other wears which ppl like to see. So try to sop this fasion show n ry o practise real sukhi when all will be deep in sikhi than all these problems will be sorted out.

also i just wanted to add, as long as theyre keeping their rehit (doin nitnem etc) and staying away from the bujjer kurahits, and not dishonouring the baaNaa that they wear, i think its ok....

Its all a fad. they soon grow out of it. From my experience most of them move away from sikhi. Some of them stay in the fold.
We need to be careful as to what priorities we set. Wearing of clothes of any sort be it kurta, chola, suit boot or whatever.. it is of no significance.

Bhai Kulbir Singh did a fantastic talk at Khalsa Camp 2005 about Bana and its significance/misconceptions. Maybe he should give his view on this subject.

interesting post daas is one of these special occasion wearers, probably because daas hasnt got enough baneh to wear all the time he goes gurdwara, however its a good point and daas will try n wear them as much as possible.
though it must be taken in to consideration like someone above stated that in todays world its very difficult to wear bana all the time. like for example if daas was going to gurdwara straight from work or university. sometimes you just cant go home and get changed especially for it. but the more we wear bana the more we show off our identity and who knows who we can influence through it.

People should try to enhance there atmic jeevans to match there outsides, but that doesn't mean that the youth are wrong in wearing bana, even if it is only sometimes. There is no condition that says you must wear the same bana every day. This would be ideal, but is not always possible. If someone has piaar for this bana and can only wear it sometimes, what's wrong with that? By the way, if someone is capable of wearing the 5 kakkars, than they are capable and worthy of wearing bana.

shouldn;t u try 2 do as much as possible? i think its gud that ppl wear a bana and want to wear the dress that Guru Gobind Singh Jee gave us... nd it also makes other ppl wanna get into sikhi, altho there maybe sum 'cool' factor 2 bana, it still helps in makin ppl wanna get into sikhi and therefore get to no more about it and find out how great it really is... we jus need pp 2 get interested nd the rest falls in 2 place, bana raises this interest.

ChingWing don't worry about it.
You're wearing Bani when presenting yourself to Maharaj. If you can't wear it at work, tryo wearing it as much as posible at home.
