Waheguru ji ka khalsa
Waheguru ji ka fateh

Khalsa jio,

From our experience with some previous century GurSikh we can say they were the best GurSikh we ever met and we miss them all. As far as we understood of there REHNEE, BEHNEE and KAHNEE they were perfect in all three.

Rehnee: Following Guru Sahib's all rehats beginning their day with sharp Amrit vela, Naam simran followed by Panj bani then Sukhmani Sahib then Asa ki vaar and additional banis until they start their kirat (job or business). Then all day their liv (mind) always in Gurmantar. Strict intake rehat some did sarabloh, some not. Simple outfit some in kurta pajamas, some in Pant Shirts (According to work). Then in evening again Gurbani recitation So dar Rehraas, then some Naam abhiyass, some book reading (news or Gurmat related) then Keertan sohila and good night sleep.

Behnee: Desperate for Sat Sangat all the time especially at weekends, some every day in the morning (if Gurudwara Sahib is nearby). Means always looking for the sangat for other Gursikhs especially keertan samagams all the time.

Kehnee: When ever they were asked to do something (Panthic or family related) they always said Sat Bachan jee and they were so committed to complete the bachans that they never care about their money, property or even their life to fulfill the commitment. No shal (cleverness), no dhokha to other GurSikhs. Means they were committed to what ever they say.

This is explanation we experienced and Sikh history tells us the Gursikh with these characters were here in this Guru Ghar since Guru Sahib's (Deh roop) times and there lifes made the Golden History on this planet. And with Guru Sahib's kirpa in his Ghar there are still those GurSikhs.

"Hain virlay Nahee(n) Ghanay" upon whom this panth continued with time.

Guru Mehar Karay

What to talk about Gurmat Rehni Behni. The Gatt-Mitt of one who obeys the hukams of Guru Sahib and keeps max rehit cannot be defined or said in words.

There were far less pothis, Gutkas and saroops of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee but Gursikhs then were far more well-versed in Gurbani than today. They had hours long Gurbani nitnems. Gurbanis like 7 Nitnem Baanis, Siri Sukhmani Sahib, Siri Asa kee Vaar, Siri Bavan Akhri, Siri Sidh Gosht, Siri Oankaar, Ramkali ki Vaar, Basant kee Vaar were standard for Gursikhs. Giani Amir Singh of Taksal has written that puratan Gursikhs used to do Panj Granthi everyday for sure. Many Gursikhs had Akal Ustat and Chandi dee Vaar kanth. Ones who did not have these baanis kanth used to do many many paaths of Siri Jap jee Sahib a day.

Subedar Baghel Singh who wrote many books on Sikh mysticism and who passed away about 10 years ago in Toronto, once told me that in olden days whenever Gursikhs used to meet each other, the first question they asked was "are you tyaar bar tyaar" i.e. are you keeping Guru Sahib's rehit. Second question they used to ask was "Charkha chalda hai ke nahi". Charkha in olden days was used to weave cotton clothes and in this sentence Charkha means Naam da charkha. Some Singhs used to ask "Khanda chalda hai na". This way they reminded each other about Naam and rehit. Today who asks this question? If you ask someone about their rehit, he or she would call you nosy and get upset. No one today asks if your charkha is going on. We have become too formal with each other.

Rehit Rehni Behni is all about Naam and for Naam. All rehit is kept for Naam. So we must never forget to indulge in Naam.

Kulbir Singh

Alas, you are right Khalsaspirit jeeo. Our charkhay make too much sound. They need lubrication and this lubrication would not be required, if we were using our charkha more often.

Guru Mehar karay.

Bhai Kulbir Singh Jee can you name the baania in punj granthi. Also do they have to been done in the morrning or can they be done througout the day at any time?

Ekta Singh jeeo,

Punj Granthi contains the following baanis:

Siri Asa kee Vaar

Siri Sukhmani Sahib

Siri Bawan Akhri

Siri Oankaar (also erroneously known as Dakhni Oankar)

Siri Sidh Gosht

Many Panj Granthis also include the following nitnem baanis:

Siri Jap jee Sahib

Siri Anand Sahib

But the main baanis of Punj Granth and where this pothi got it's name from are the 5 baanis stated first in the post.

As for doing them throughout the day, with the exception of Siri Asa kee Vaar that is typically and traditionally done during the morning hours, all baanis can be done throughout the day in several sittings. Best Anand of course would be to do it all in one sitting.

Daas,
Kulbir Singh

Bhai Kulbir Singh when u do punj granth paath, do you do it in one sitting?

Also whats ur daily routine in terms of gurbani path? What baania you do in a day and at what time?

Thanks I think gursikhs should share their lifestyles, so other can be inspired to do the same and reach our ultimate aim VAHEGUROO

Veer Ekta Singh jeeo,

It doesn't seem right to talk about your nitnem. I can only tell you what all Singhs at Tapoban Sahib do. Siri Sukhmani Sahib, Siri Asa kee Vaar, Ramkali kee Vaar and 6 angs of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee are pretty much standard. Rest everyone has their own nitnem that as per hukam of Guru Sahib should be kept gupt or shared with only close Gursikhs.

Daas,
Kulbir Singh

Below is the brief jeevan of Baba Khazaan Singh jee that I wrote few years ago. It will answer your question on how much nitnem Gursikhs used to have and how much nitnem we should have:

Baba Khazaan Singh jee

For sometime I wanted to write the Gurmukhi jeevan of Baba Khazaan Singh, the father of Sant Sunder Singh Bhindranwalay. Sant Sunder Singh jee Bhindranwaalay was a great Gursikh who led an exemplary life, did massive parchaar of Sikhi, inspired countless to take amrit and taught Gurbani and Gurbani meanings to countless students, in his short life of 42 years or so. While many have heard about the Gurmukhi life of Sant Sunder Singh jee, few are aware of how great his father was. This is a feeble attempt by this insect to write something on the great life of Baba Khazaan Singh jee. This is based on Dr Sher Singhs book on Sant Sunder Singh, Sant Gurbachan Singhs coverage of Sant Sunder Singhs life and oral narrations from Gursikhs from time to time.

Baba Khazaan Singh was the middle son of Baba Makhan Singh the grandfather of Sant Sunder Singh jee. Here are some highlights of Baba jees jeevan:

1) Baba jee was a simple farmer who worked hard to earn bread for his family. He was from village Bhinder Kalan in Ferozepur district of Punjab.
2) Baba jee was extremely honest. He never let even a grain not belonging to him, come to his home. While working in his fields, he used to constantly do Naam Simran and Gurbani paath.
3) He got married to a very Gurmukhi bibi Mata Taab Kaur jee. She was not educated but due to her husbands satsangat, she developed keen interest and love for Gurbani.
4) Baba jee had great urge to have darshan of Guru Sahib. In year 1887, a year before the birth of Sant Sunder Singh jee (year 1887), at the time of Avtaar Purab of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee, Baba jee decided to go all out for darshan of Guru Sahib. He committed to doing strict amritvela and doing one Siri Sukhmani Sahib standing on one leg, 3 hours and 45 minutes before sunrise. Just few days had passed while engaging in day night paath like this that Baba jee was hit with extreme Bairaag. He gave up all interest in world and started doing bhajan day and night. At the behest of some gursikhs, who asked him to come in Sehaj Avastha, he started taking care of his worldly duties.
5) Before the birth of Sant Sunder Singh, Baba jee did 36 lakh (3.6 million) jaap of Mool Mantr.
6) Later in his life he did 125,000 jaap of Siri Jap jee Sahib.
7) Later in his years he did 101 Paaths of Siri Guru Granth Sahib jee in the span of 3 years. This means about 3 Sehaj paaths a month. Along with this he did 36 lakh paaths of Mool Mantr.
8) He used to do at least 100 angs worth of baani a day.
9) He used to do 3300 jaap of Mool Mantra a day.
10) He had about 100 angs of baani fully memorized.
11) He used to wear only Khaddar.
12) He was a very strict amritdhaari.
13) He never let a day pass without going to Gurdwara Sahib.
14) He used to eat only once a day at 10am.
15) Before eating food, he used to look for someone to share with.

Reading the life of Baba jee, I was surprised. So much kamaayee and no one knows his name. I have no doubt that even today there are many gupt gursikhs out there about whom we know nothing.

May Guru Sahib do kirpa on us and may we lead our life like Baba jee and other great gursikhs.

Daas,
Kulbir Singh

Ekta Singh, Baba Khazaan Singh jee was a working man - he was a farmer. To be a farmer is put in a lot physical work more then jobs we have today. For that you should be wondering how he ate so little but was still able to do so much Paath and work at the same time? Well the answer is Naam. Every Vaheguru we recite has an enormous amount of pure positive energy which we store inside of us. Now, within Gurbani is Naam, and so Gurbani would give us motivational energy to live the Miri Piri Life we should be living - the Temporal/Worldly life and Spiritual Life in Balance without interference of Maya, Lust and Pride. All Naam and Gurbani and nothing else. Bhagat Naam Dev Ji says in Gurbani to jap Naam while performing worldly work is fruitful.

Baba Harnam Singh Ji is another example who had little time to do paath as he was always working. But he implemented Gurbani and Naam in the time he was working and in the little time he had when he wasn't working. Therefore, he always had an unbroken connection with Gurbani and Naam - in this way he became attached to it.

Obviously you need good karma to become a Saint or Bhramgyani as these two Saints had. But thats no excuse for any of us especially me.

another example is Sant Jarnail Singh ji. According to Gyani Thakur Singh ji, Baba Ji spent over 3/4 of the day doing hard physical labour on his farm. For the exact number of hours, see his katha on sant ji's jeevan - "Sant Da Jeevan".

for example if ur accountant, in an office on the pc, teacher and other jobs. Its hard. In fact jaaping naam is easy if ur farmer, because u don't really need to think or talk.

Ekta Singh jeeo,

Guru Sahib's Dharam is for all people from all kinds of background. If we follow Gurmat, then swaas can be made successful even if you are an accountant, teacher or whatever. Ultimately everything is in the hands of Vaheguru and Vaheguru has created this whole creation only for one reason - Glory of Sants:

Jeh Pasrai Pasaar, Sant Partaap||
(Whenever he creates the creation, it's for the glory of Sants).

Vaheguru wants nothing more than his creation japping Naam. As a Gursikhs gets more and more into Naam and Gurbani, Vaheguru frees him from worldly chains. All a Gursikh needs to do is make a firm conviction in his mind to do paath and simran. As an example, if a Gursikhs makes a firm resolution of doing 25 Siri Jap jee Sahibs a day, at first he may face some difficulty but in few days, his worldly chains will start to loosen up and this Gursikh will surely achieve his goal. As a Gursikh moves towards Vaheguru, Vaheguru frees his worldly chains. So it does not matter whether you are a doctor, engineer or an accountant. One can do whatever amount of bhagti one wants to really do. Vaheguru himself wants his creation to japp Naam and do paath. He will surely ensure that his Gursikh gets full chance of doing so.

Kulbir Singh
