Controversy about celebrating Gurpurab

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa
Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh

I need a quick advice from sangat. Is there any limitation on how the Gurpurab should be celebrated?

Does gurmat has any limitations about when the gurpurab should be celebrated? The reason for asking this question is that we had arranged Asa Di War keertan program yesterday to celebrate Parkash divas of Sri Hargobind Singh Ji Maharaaj which is today i.e. 5th July.

The gurdwara committe due to some political reasons has made a lot of noise that how can we celebrate a gurpurab a day before the actual date. Unfortunately none of the committee members knew themselves if there is any gurpurab today. They just want a reason to fight. People who only come to gurdwara when there is comittee election or when they have to collect money.

They said they are going to get opinion of some intellectuals on this and come back with proper response that why gurpurab can not be celebrated a day before the actual gurpurab but they say that it can be celebrated a week or 10 days after gurpurab.

Can sangat on forum help with any Gurbani references, any important places/gurdwaras which have does this in past/ any hukamnamas??

I need this ASAP and any help from sangat will be appreciated.

Guru Fateh Ji

Daas,

Gurpartap Singh

This has more to do with punjabi culture where they do not celebrate birthdays earlier than the actual day.

vaheguroo jee ka khalsa vaheguroo jee kee fateh!!

i dont think it really matters, a day or two doesnt make a difference. guru jee won't be "mad" or anything.

in fact i think this whole thing of celebrating gurpurabs should not be exclusive to one day of the whole year... i mean who really cares what the exact date is? guru jee is eternal. if htey still have a problem with it tell them you declare that day "international sri guru hargobind sahib jee day" and therefore have reason to celebrate. its not gonna bring you "bad luck" if you celebrate it a day early.

if gurdwara committees are fighting over such stupid and petty little things then they are putting great responsibility on the next generation of sikhs to bring the panth back on track

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru JI Ki fateh.

Anon is right. This is a punjabi/brahmin superstition thingy.....
Rehatwaan Singhs should NOT let such things bother them.

A GURPURAB is an ocassion to CELEBRATE the JOY of SADH SANGAT/KIRTAN/KATHA/GURBANI VICHAAR.....and wash our souls of Paaps and IMMERSE ourselves in the Happiness of being at GURU Ji's Lotus Charan.

The "actual" date doesnt matter one little bit ( of course dont take it that far that you want to celebrate Vasakhi in September !!!)...after all who can say with certainty that the ACTUAL DATE of GURPURAB is the "actual" date that event took place in History. With the way our Calendar is going the dates have already shifted around quite a bit.

SO go ahead, celebrate any Gurpurab at a time conveneint to the local sangat.....use the opportunity to gather at Guru Ji's Charan and enjoy the Bliss of Sadh sangat. Leave the Thit Vaar superstitions to the superstitious !!

I can bet no one can find a quote from GURBANI to prove a Gurpurab must be celebrated on a particular date and not before... a sadh/sant/baba/mahapurash types may find that their particular baba/sant/sadh/mahapurash says this and that but that will be that particular man's word and not GURBANI REHAT.
