Nitnem banis before Dashmesh Pita

Is there some historical reference about the nitnem banis sikhs used to do during the period of first 9 Guru Sahibaan.During charan pahul, sikhs must have been getting some nitnem of gurbani.

Bhai Gurdas jee's vaars mention the banis of Japji Sahib, Sodar-Arti and Sohila Sahib. The nitnem of Gursikhs in time of Guru Arjan Dev jee is clear as it is at the start of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
