were they a militant group protecting sikhs from racists, or did they start off as criminal organisation that also protected the community from extremists

raja ranjit singh was called shere-e punjab. I personally feel all puratan/present singhs belonging to the land of 5 rivers with lots of naam kamayee and jeevan and bir rass, they were/are all shers-e-punjab
