It's prem for Sat-Guru's pavitar charan that reduces our 'haumai' - which is the primal reason for us not being able to get up at amritvela - this is because our ego tries to supersede our prem, and tells us more sleep = better health.

Anything that increases vismaad and prem i.e. kirtan, simran, listening to kathaa, reading sakhiyan, doing nishkaam seva etc will ultimately increase the will we need to wake up in at amritvela - but more importantly - it is Guru Prasad that will ultimately be turn our lives around.

If we go to sleep with Guru Mantr in our mind - then we have already won half the battle - the other half is to wake up and recite Gur-Mantr before any other thoughts get a hold - this will empower us and enable us to understand why it is that we need to wake up early.

Hearing the wise words of Sat-Guru is sometimes in it self enough to give us the discipline we need, in Sidh Gosht - Maharaj says:

ਖੰਡਿਤ ਨਿਦ੍ਰਾ ਅਲਪ ਅਹਾਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥੮॥
Sleep little, and eat little; O Nanak, this is the essence of wisdom". ||8||
