During the Kharkoo years in Punjab in the 1980s, Professor Darshan Singh came up with a katha kirtan of this Shabad of Bhai Gurdas jee and it was an instant hit in Punjab. He used this shabad to explain the nature of a Sikh. The katha was a politically influenced.

Anyways, below are the arths of this pankiti based on this daas' meagre understanding:

dhuruthee pairaa haeth hai dhuruthee haeth vusundhaa paanee

The Earth is below the feet and below the Earth or inside the Earth resides Water. Just as water resides so below everyone else, same way a Gursikh is extremely humble and always stays dust of everyone's feet.

paanee chulai neevaan no nirumul seethul sudh puraanee

Water always flows towards downhill and is sheethal i.e. cool and without dirt. Same way, a Gursikh always stays humble. Like water is cool and without dirt, same way a Gursikh stays calm and has a clean heart.

buhu rungee eik rung hai subhunaa andhar eiko jaanee

Water adopts whichever colour is put into it and adopts the shape of whichever utensil it's put in. Similarly a Gursikh is of accommodating nature with others.

thuthaa hovai dhup vich shaavai thuntaa viruthee haanee

It becomes hot when placed under hot sun rays and when placed under shadown it becomes cool. Not sure what quality of Gursikhi is learned from here. Will think more. If someone else can help, it would be great.

thupudhaa puroupukaar no thuntae puroupukaar vihaanee

It becomes hot out of helping others and becomes cold too out of helping others. A Gursikh too if comes in Bir Rass or Shant Rass, does so only out of Parupkaar i.e. helping others, for the benefit of others.

agan bujhaaeae thupath vich thuntaa hovai bilum n aanee

But, even when it's hot, it still extinguishes fire and when it's hot, it does not take time in getting cold if taken away from fire. Even when a Gursikh is in Bir Rass, he still is extremely calm at heart and when even the aggressor apologises, a Gursikh does not take even a moment in coming out of Bir Rass i.e. calming down.

gur sikhee dhee eaehu neesaanee

From this example and nature of water, one learns of Gursikhi. This is what are the signs or nishaani of Gursikhi.
