A dream comes true for 22 couples

Monday, May 12th, 2008
With blessings of Guru Granth Sahibji and Waheguru, it was a dream come true for 22 couples who never dreamt of getting married in a such a befitting manner that too in the presence of over 25,000 sikhs who came from far off places to bless the newlywed couples.
The happiest of them were the couples' parents who never dreamt of their sons and daughters getting married in such a befitting manner that too without spending a single rupee.
Thanks to the Prabhandak committee, Gurudwara Saheb Barambala, Sikh Chawniat, Kishanbagh, Hyderabad for making the impossible dream come true for the new couples and their parents and grandparents.
On sunday (May 11) 22 couples got married at "Samuhik Vivaha Samagam" (mass marriage) under one umbrella Gurudwara Saheb Barambala, Sikh Chawniat in the presence of Punj Pyaras Singh Saheb Bhai Ram Singhji of Takhat Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib, Nanded, Maharastra.
The brides and bridegrooms hailed from Hyderabad, Karimnagar, Hanamkonda, Nizamabad, Aurangabad, Bidar and other places. The Samuhik Vivaha Samagam started at 9 am and Anand Karaj (Lawan Phere) was performed at 11 am. The programme continued until 1 pm where all the bridegrooms were taken in a colourful baraat on horseback.
This unique service was provided by the Prabhandak Committee Gurudwara Saheb Barambala keeping in view that many economically poor families who cannot afford to perform such luxurious marriages that require heavy expenditure which cannot be borne by economically poor sikh families.
The most heartening part was that all the Sikh Gurudwaras in Andhra Pradesh extended wholehearted support for the successful conduct of these marriages.
Various gurudwara committees and individuals presented domestic articles to the newly married couples which will help in settling their lives. The Prabhadak Committee, President, S. Harbans Singh said that only Gurmukh and Amritdhari Sikhs were allowed to participate in the marriages.
The Prabhandak Committtee made all arrangements including accommodation facilities, Guru-ka-Langar ( breakfast, lunch and dinner etc).
After the marriages, committee will keep tab on couples to see them live happily without any family problems.

Waheguru ji ka khlasa waheguru ji ki fateh.

Quite a few of the uncomplimentary habits that have crept in in our society - daaj/over spending/lavishness/not as per Gurmatt/SRM/ Marriage Palaces etc etc should be curtailed. This is one way.

The Namdharees introduced the RS 1.25 marriages - that is one good habit that should be adopted. As today a Gursikh with a daughter is worried about the expenses he will be expected to foot on her marriage ? IF he has already brought up his daughter as Gursikh and educated her to his ability..why should he still have to pay so much more just to get a good groom ? Its all a matter of greed/maya.

Sikhs hsould move away from such lavishness.show offs types of marriages and go towards simple Gurmatt based anand Vivahs.

Waheguru ji ka khalsa
Waheguru ji ki fateh

Thanks for your reply Giani Jarnail Singh ji.

Most of the people on message board & discussion forum are from financially well off background that is why they aren't interested in this post. I would like to highlight the fact that these couple respect Sikh values (Anand Karaj) as compared to the majority of people who are unmarried. The unmarried are just fooling around with opposite sex, waiting for an oppurtunity to make some kind of monetary gain through marriage. They consider sexual relation and Marriage as two seperate acts !

This is making them loose character which is why they are moving away from Sikh principles. Parents too have stopped fullfilling their responsibility i.e arranging marriages of their children at the right age. Recently i read that all Patshahian had an arranged marriage before age of 23 !

Why doesn't any of the Gurudwara Committee's across the globe take this sort of initiative ?

These mass weddings initiatives are very important to save Sikhi in this age.

One must give a serious thought as to what is important, GREED or SIKH moral values.

Actions speak louder than words !

Waheguru ji ki fateh

It is these lavish weddings, which have taken birth in the west (through increasing prosperity), that are responsible for Punjab being the kuri-maar capital of the world.

Punjabs monstrous skewed male:female ratio is the responsibility of us all.

Even attending parties (where most of the money goes) is statement of us condoning the expense - and thus socially pressuring the poor, both here and more importantly in India - which ultimately leads these folk to kill their daughters (born and unborn).

As mentioned above, the Namdhari are to be lauded for their strict adherance to inexpensive weddings, and notjust that. It is common for numerous Namdhari couples to get married at one time, as per the article above. To finish, it is compulsory for all Namdhari couples to have taken amrit before (or at) the marriage.

AKJ are also to be praised for their simple weddings without dhaaj.

Gurdwaras take no responsibilty, they are too busy making money, researching grant funding opportunities from the Government and Lottery groups, fighting over ownership/leadership of the Gurdwara, spending money on lavish extensions rather than investing in Gurmat parchaar and organsised education for the youth.
