When this word 'maaye' is used in vocative case (sambodhan kaarak), then mostly it means mother. It also means sakhi or friend as per some translators. This word is used as a shingaar (decoration) or alankaar purpose. It makes the poem sweet. Many kavis (poets) old and new have used this word. Shiv Kumar Batalvi has used this word 'maaye' in his poetry e.g. "Maaye nee mai shikra yaar banaaiya'. Other words that are used for alankaar or shingaar purpose in Gurbani and those are not related to the meanings are 'Raam Raaje', 'Bal raam jeeo' etc.
