I came across the following pankiti with two padd-chhed:

ਨੀਕੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬੇਗਾਰੀਆ, ਲੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ

ਨੀਕੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਿਗਾਰੀ ਆਲੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥

The shabad is of Bhagat Naamdev jee, in Tilang Raag, on Ang 727.The pankiti being discussed is the rahao pankiti of this shabad (posted below).

Which one is correct? As for the more common padd-chhed, the second one is more popular.

The meaning of the first one is: ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਬੇਗਾਰ ਭਲੀ ਹੈ.

The meaning of the second one is:

Begaari means forced labour or such labour that one has to do as per government order, without pay.

Please do vichaar of this pankiti. Daas will post his understanding once daas reaches some conclusion.

The whole shabad is as follows:

Bhai Sahib jio,

May be our assumption is wrong ਬਾਕੀ ਆਪ ਜੀ ਹੀ ਭੇਦ ਖੋਲੋ।

As we see that Farsi is in succeding lines.

As per Farsi's little knowledge to das we have Bi for without.

so what das understands is gar is for doer.

AS Akal is all doer so when we are one with Akal and no longer are doer of ego self.Term Bigari(by adding i at end it becomes a sifat or adjective eg from Bahadur we have Bahduri )So attainment of that attribute from God is good.

So good is your(Bestowment of Bigari Awashta) and high is your name.Bigar is person without able to do any thing and Bigari is state of that person.Das did interpretation based upon literal meaning and tenders an opology if something wrong is writtan as he is incapabale to comprihend the words of Akal.

After doing vichaar of this pankiti, I am inclined towards the first padd-chhed i.e. ਨੀਕੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬੇਗਾਰੀਆ, ਲੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ.

Veer Khalsaspirit brought up a very valid question that in order to do the above

stated padd-chhed, ‘ਲੇ’ should have been ‘ ਲੈ’ but presented below are pankitis in

which ‘ਲੇ’ has been used as ‘ ਲੈ’.

The meanings in my humble opinion are as follows:

O Vaheguru, your begaariya (forced labour i.e. the kirat that we are forced to do as per our Karma) too is sweet to us, if we recite your Naam.

As explained before, begaari is such kirat or work that one has to do as per Shaahi-Furmaan (government order) and normally one does not get paid for this. It is said that thousands of workers worked on the construction of Taj Mahal as per hukam of the Mughal King Shah Jahan and these workers were not paid; just given food and shelter.

We lead our lives as per hukam of Vaheguru. This hukam is written on our forehead based on our previous Karma. This hukam can be called destiny or Kismet. Bhagat jee has compared this to begaari a form of bonded labour. This begaariya can be sweet, if we japp Naam. This is why, I prefer the padd-chhed - ਨੀਕੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬੇਗਾਰੀਆ, ਲੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ.

On the other hand, is the popular padd-chhed ਨੀਕੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਿਗਾਰੀ ਆਲੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥. I have reservations about this form of padd-chhed because of following reasons:

1) The word ਆਲੇ has never been used in Gurbani, anywhere else, as meaning ਆਹਲਾ i.e. great or wonderful.

2) The first half of the pankiti does not connect to the second half. The first half would mean that your begaari is neeki i.e. pure or sweet but in the second half they are saying that your Naam is great. If we do the padd-chhed the first way i.e. as ਨੀਕੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਬੇਗਾਰੀਆ, ਲੇ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ then you can easily connect the two halves of this pankiti. Your begaari is neeki because of taking your Naam (accepting your naam, japping your naam).

Rest, Gurbani is Agam Agaadh Bodh. The above is just my humble opinion.

I would appreciate if some Gursikh could show some other perspective.
